This year saw my second CCW event, but it was far from being a case of “Déjà-vu”. In my earlier blog post I promised that Airbus would not repeat itself and we did some things very differently.
Here are five of my favourites:
1. A boulevard of hybrid evolution
This year, the Airbus stand was a boulevard of hybrid evolution, as well as so much more. Seven demo spots allowed visitors to experience the future of radio communications, TETRA radios and hybrid networks.
The stand had dedicated meeting rooms and a lounge area, giving partners and customers a relaxing yet inspiring atmosphere in which to meet us. The ceiling featured dozens of large balls that changed colour every day. The colour of each ball could be readily changed using a remote control and on the last day, a little ‘experimentation’ showed that all the colours could be made to show up at the same time.
2. Innovations on show
Visitors could experience several interactive demos, ranging from a metro technician making use of virtual reality, to a Tactilon Dabat hybrid device running mission-critical apps. These included group calling, real-time video sharing and command and control with map information that visitors could try themselves.
3. A Hong Kong flavour
It was very important to us to offer a little local flavour to visitors. Not only were our meeting rooms named in honour of local action heroes Jackie Chan and Jet Li, but our demo spots also had signs both in English and Cantonese. But that was not all. Visitors could also try the Cantonese version of the Tactilon Agnet app that brings secure group communications to smart devices.
Another innovation was having local models who wore and used TETRA radios and accessories from Airbus, just like any professional users would. They had never used TETRA radios before, but learned to use them following a very short introduction from one of our staff members.
4. A standout stand
At this year’s CCW, no map was needed to find the Airbus stand – visitors entering the Asia World Expo hall three couldn’t miss us. It was also convenient for visitors to walk across the boulevard at the Airbus stand, grab a snack, share ideas and relax with their peers in the lounge area, in between taking in our demos.
5. Presentations came thick and fast
Throughout the show, our moderator Constance Klemenz gave over twenty presentations on Tactilon Dabat, the first smartphone and full TETRA radio in one device. This roused visitors’ interest and the presentations brought in a good crowd. There were also new videos of Tactilon Dabat presented on five big screens and in meeting rooms – all these will be available soon on our YouTube and Vimeo channels.
Even though big events like CCW require a lot of work and attention to detail, you may always learn a thing or two as a bonus. One of my favourite takeaways from this event is a new white paper about Critical Communications Service Layer.
I didn’t know anything about this topic before the event, but now I understand that a Critical Communications Layer is required on top of 4G/5G networks – it provides management and communication functionalities, and combines narrowband and broadband services.
